A nice LED installation at FeketeZaj
FeketeZaj is the one festival that truly has my heart. I always try to be there and do something special.
FeketeZaj in my opinion is the cutest festival in Hungary: lots of people coming together for four days of music, side events, installations, and art.
A few years ago, we had the opportunity to redesign the lighting for an installation: a set of four gates on a bridge leading to one part of the festival. The original version used a few synchronised coloured floodlights to illuminate the gates, creating a fair amount of light pollution around them.
We went with something a bit more meticulous, installing individually controllable LED strips. Each gate got 15 metres of LEDs. We used an ESP32 on a custom PCB so that it looked good (to us—nobody else would see it), then put everything together. In previous years, we had issues setting up the LED segments, so we separated the sides from the top. This lets the sides "burn" upwards in effects such as Fire.
This year, I spent some time on it and built the first version of a small WLED Manager tool that helps configure segment boundaries and schedules the WLED controllers to turn on at night.
